By using masterbatches, it is possible to save time, energy and cost required for mixing raw materials and labor. Also, due to the lack of proper dispersion of some additives, it is not possible to add them directly to the product. For example, in injection processes, adding powder additives is not suitable due to the short length of the injection machine spiral, and the use of polymer masterbatches is recommended.
Some of the benefits of using masterbatch include:
- Ease of storage, handling and application due to granular form
- Simplified feeding and solving the problem of changing additive concentration and uniformity of color or properties during production
- No dispersion of pigments in the air, thus creating a health and safety risk for employees and preventing contamination of adjacent production lines
- Better distribution and uniformity of color, additive or filler throughout the finished product
- Increased process repeatability by pre-determining the masterbatch additive components
- Improved melting process due to compatibility of the masterbatch binder with the polymer
- Greater stability of properties or color
- Better controllability of turbidity and transparency of colored products
- Reduced frequency of feeding in the process by using masterbatch containing concentrated UV-stable additives, antioxidants, flame retardants or optical brighteners
- Eliminates cleaning and cleaning costs
